6. Collective and certification marks: the activity of the Vermouth di Torino Consortium
OICCE – Studio Torta, Turin
Dr. Maria Cristina Baldini, of Studio Torta and Vice President of OICCE, talked about a very important topic, that of the protection of the intellectual property of aromatized wines. She clearly underlined that the brand serves to fill a series of legislative gaps, taking into account that PDO and PGI are recognized in non-EU countries only on the basis of bilateral agreements and this does not happen in all countries. In these cases, therefore, protection can be pursued through the collective mark or the certification mark. The first can be headed by an association or a consortium and serves to distinguish itself from the others. The second certifies the quality and origin of a specific product. As an effective example, Dr. Baldini led to the registration of Vermouth di Torino as a certification mark in the United States by the respective Consortium.
